KRG Prime Minister Chairs Meeting of the High Council for Education and Higher Education Accreditation Board

On Sunday, 12 May 2024, Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Chairman of the High Council for Education and Higher Education Accreditation, presided over the council’s inaugural meeting. This meeting followed the approvement of its governing law and internal policy.

The meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, focused on the council’s goals to uphold the quality of education and higher education in the Kurdistan Region. The council aims to promote a culture of assessment aligned with international mechanisms and standards, if deemed suitable and capable of enhancing the educational and scientific qualities of institutions and their curricula.

At the beginning of the meeting, the council reviewed the vision, mission, purpose, and plans of the board of accreditation for educational programmes and institutions in accordance with its approved internal policy. After deliberations, the council decided to establish the Board of Accreditation for Educational Institutions, Curriculum, and Higher Education. The members and secretary general of the board were appointed.

The meeting concluded with the assignment of the board’s plans, strategy, and policies, which includes an assessment of a number of public and private schools and universities as an initial pilot. This involves deploying standardised assessment techniques aimed at achieving excellence in academia and education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
