PM Masrour Barzani chairs meeting on air pollution

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (GOV.KRD) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani chaired a meeting today to address air pollution issues in the cities of Erbil and Duhok.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that environmental protection is a cornerstone of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s agenda. He underscored the importance of collective efforts to preserve Kurdistan’s climate and its nature, describing this as a national duty and a shared responsibility.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ health and the region’s environment, highlighting air pollution as a top priority. He directed relevant authorities to take necessary measures to prevent pollution sources and penalize violators.

The following measures were highlighted as part of the government’s actions:

1. From today, factories and refinery plants operating outside regulations and causing environmental harm will face legal action.
2. Illegal production and smuggling of harmful fuel are banned. Associated gas flaring in oil fields must be strictly limited.
3. Private generators must install filters for noise and emissions, as outlined in government guidelines. Violators will be held accountable.
4. The use of polluted water for irrigation must stop.
