KRG Prime Minister Stands Firm in Defense of Kurdistan Against Injustice and Oppression
On 20 March 2024, Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), graced the Newroz festivities in the district of Akre. Joining him were ambassadors, consuls general and diplomatic envoys from various nations in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
In his address, Prime Minister Barzani extended warm greetings on the auspicious occasion of Newroz, expressing his profound joy at being present in Akre for this year’s celebration. He envisioned Akre ascending as the preeminent hub for Newroz celebrations, not only within Kurdistan but also globally, in the years ahead.
Here is the complete transcript of Prime Minister Barzani’s speech:
“In the Name of God,
“For generations, the spirited youth of Akre have lit torches and scaled mountains to honour Newroz. Nowhere else on this Earth does the essence of this celebration resonate as deeply as it does in Akre. Hence, it is our fervent wish to convene here this year, with the firm belief that Akre shall rise to eminence as the centre of Newroz festivities, not just in Kurdistan but in the world.
“I extend heartfelt congratulations to all the people of Kurdistan, as well as to all the peoples and nations worldwide who observe Newroz, whether within or beyond Kurdistan’s borders.
“At this moment, I also wish to offer my sincere condolences to the families affected by the tragic loss of lives and property due to the recent rain and floods in Duhok and Zakho. May God grant peace to the departed souls and bestow patience and solace upon their grieving families. To those who have suffered property losses, rest assured that we are committed to providing assistance and redress to alleviate your burdens during this difficult time.
“I express profound gratitude to the resilient Kurdish people, who have endured various challenges, including delays in salary payments and inadequate budgets. While our concerns encompass broader issues such as our rights, aspirations, and territorial integrity, we acknowledge the pressing need to address immediate financial hardships for the welfare of our people. Unfortunately, certain obstacles have impeded the timely disbursement of Kurdish salaries. However, I wish to reassure the Kurdish people that we are actively engaged in constructive dialogues with the Iraqi Prime Minister to swiftly resolve this matter. We anticipate a resolution imminently.
“Newroz holds profound significance as a national commemoration. On this day, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to God, the blood of our martyrs, Peshmerga and our people in safeguarding our rights, achievements, and the integrity of the Kurdistan Region’s entity against oppression, injustice, and corruption. We pledge to stand resolute in fulfilling these sacred promises.
“Newroz not only heralds a new day or a new year but also symbolises a renewal of life for us. As we rejoice today, may it signal the advent of a year brimming with greater joy and accomplishments for our people. Happy Newroz!”
